Architectural Design Competition for the development of the Abu Haneefa Mosque in Baghdad (Iraq) – Third Prize

This competition—organized by the Ministry of Sunni Endowments— is aimed at designing an enlargement for the main building of the mosque.

The main concept of the project is to enlarge the main building of the mosque towards the River Tigris in order to create more space outside for the worshippers. This new outdoor space has been covered to provide shadow during the pray time.

The indoor space for pray has been formed with a huge dome. Moreover, the surroundings have been redesigned to add additional buildings such as the College, the Fatwa house, the Guest-house, the Ablution’s building, etc.

Balam Consultores has been the only European team accepted to participate in this international competition.
