Abu Haneefa mosque enlargement international competition (Baghdad) – 3rd prize

This project proposed the restoration and enlargement of the Abu Haneefa mosque, as well as the rehabilitation of the surrounding urban space. In the mosque we proposed an important enlargement towards the river, creating at the same time two semi-closed open air praying areas. In the surroundings we proposed the construction of the College and its close areas, the houses of the people related to the mosque, and a comercial area with a hotel for the visitors to the mosque and the city. One of our most important concerns was the recover of the surrounding houses, that are protected because of their historical and architectonical value.

Masterplan proposal for Ulaanbaatar (Mongolia)

Bad weather conditions do not advise a public space as conceived in the areas with medium temperatures. That is the reason why it must be considered a covered pedestrian street network allowing connection of the houses with parking, shops and public facilities without going outside. These pedestrian streets must be protected from cold and wind, they must also be heated and they must allow to penetrate the light sun as long as possible in order to minimize the energy consumption. These streets should allow the pedestrians walk across the whole urban organization, moreover the roof-covering of the same must be accessible for people and the treatment of green area must allow recreational use in the months of good weather.

Tender for redesigning the Erbil citadel north-south axis (Kurdistan Region)

Our proposal arises from the following aims:
  1. Enhance archaeological remains which will probably become visible in future excavations, due to the historical importance of this city. We pretend to show the city stratification, created by the superposition of different cities along the history. For this purpose, we will use the urban cut carried out during the 50’s to develop a complete excavation;
  2. The urban cut carried out in the 50’s broke the existing urban fabric. We pretend to restore this fabric as well as the original urban scale.
  3. The north-south axis, which is currently a “strange” element in the urban fabric, must become an integral part of the city and not a cut or a barrier which divides the city into two different parts.
  4. The landscape quality of the axis needs to be improved (both the facades of the buildings and the urban space) in order to enhance not only the archaeological remains but also the architectural image of the city.

Our proposal to accomplish these aims is to convert the north-south axis into a big archaeological park which becomes an integral part of the city.
